Work at National Abattoir Progressing- Agriculture Minister
A National Abattoir which began construction over two years ago could open its doors by March month end.
The abattoir funded by the Government of Venezuela is expected to help reduce Dominica’s food import bill and provide opportunities for poultry and pork farmers.
Minister for Agriculture, Johnson Drigo says the finishing touches on the facility are underway.
“As we speak, Contractors of the abattoir are on island. There was some necessary work to be done following the testing of the facility, this is being done rapidly and as we speak we are now bringing in some new chickens; over 2,000 arrived last week with more to come in this week for as soon as repair works are completed. With all of the equipment exposed there were some technical hitches that had to be dealt with following the testing of the facility. This equipment is being replaced and very soon before the end of march we will be formally opening the abattoir.”
