National Clean-Up Campaign Deemed Successful
Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux says the volume of waste collected during last Thursday’s clean-up campaign should serve as a lesson that Dominica has to come up with more innovative ways to manage waste.
He says a donation of a cheque to the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation is timely in light of the initiative.
The Corporation received a cheque of $126,500 dollars from the Swiss Consulate to improve waste management on the island.
“The event couldn’t be more timely as it comes on the heels of a national clean up, that’s Thursday 18, February and still ongoing I’ve been informed; geared towards the elimination of mosquito breeding sites here in Dominica as the world faces a new and emerging threat of the Zika virus, one which has the potential to undo so much of the gains that we have made in recent years and has been coined by the WHO as an international public health emergency.
“The volume of waste collected and still being collected from last week’s event is a grim reminder to each and every one of us, Government and citizens alike, that we have to come up with much more innovative ways to manage our waste and keep our environment clean, thus protecting ourselves from emerging threats such as the Zika virus whilst at the same time safe guarding livelihoods.”
Dr. Darroux says this is especially important to the Tourism sector and necessary to generate much needed revenue.
The Health Minister did not hesitate to commend the country for its efforts.
“I take the opportunity to say hearts off to each and every Dominican who answered last week’s clarion call and engaging activities that led to what I termed a very successful clean up activity. A special heartfelt gratitude to the management and staff for the Dominica solid Waste Management Corporation for their willingness to go the extra mile to ensure that not only was the waste collected but is being suitably disposed of at the land field, even if it means working the entire weekend and lots of extra hours.”
