Dredging and Management of Rivers Critical in Dominica
The Minister says this will help militate against disasters similar to what Dominica experienced as a result of TS Erika.
“We dump into the natural water streams, we do [many] things and as we seek to rebuild better we cannot repeat the same mistakes over and over again. [During TS Erika] the bulk of the damage was caused by the rivers behaving badly. But there are reasons why they behave badly; because something happens at the hinterland; soil erosion takes place, logs come down from the mountain tops etc. going forward how do we look at our rivers?…We have to plan properly. You have heard from our Prime Minister that we have started the process of mapping the rivers. We have got to get to a point where we have to go beyond just dredging our rivers when things like that happen. We may have to develop something like maintenance manual to actually dredge and manage our rivers maybe twice [or] three times per year which should be informed by proper technical advice to militate against such destruction happening in the future.”
