Digicel Dominica Donates to seven Primary Schools
Six of the water tanks; each with a capacity of one thousand gallons, were presented at a ceremony on Monday 30th, 2015. One was presented to the Pioneer Preparatory prior to the ceremony.
The donation amounts to about EC$11,000.
Vivek Sharma is Country Manager of Digicel Dominica.
“With this we would like to reaffirm Digicel’s commitment to the people and Government of Dominica in rebuilding and making a better place. In the last three months since TS Erika, Digicel has invested more than half a million dollars into various initiatives with communities, families and the Government in the shape of aid, food, water, utilizes and wherever we have been able to make a difference. The presentation today is just another step in the same direction… We look forward to even greater collaboration with the Government in its efforts.”
The Country Director also extended gratitude to J. Astaphan Company for procurement of the water tanks.
Education Minister, Hon. Petter St. Jean says the donation from Digicel is significant.
“We are indeed extremely grateful for the show of solidarity which is indicative of your interest and care for the children of Dominica and their education. Today’s donation is especially significant because it addresses a basic human need, water.
“Following the impact of TS Erika, water systems across the island were severely compromised. This resulted in the temporary closure of a number of our schools. Students could not have been allowed to return to schools where there was no potable water due to health and environmental concerns. While we were able to secure water tanks and to provide bottled water to several of our schools, we continue to be challenged by the very high demand from our student population. Therefore this donation from Digicel is still quite relevant.”
The Newtown; Roseau; Penville, Goodwill, Roosevelt Douglas and Caleb Laurent Primary schools all received tanks at that ceremony. Pioneer Preparatory received a tank earlier last month.
