Court Injunction Prevents the Awarding of Adult Costume Band of the Year.
Less than one week after a letter was issued to the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) by Thunderbirds Carnival band and Carnival Corner, the matter has taken a new twist.
An injunction letter was handed to CEO of the DDA Colin Piper, moments before the start of the Carnival 2016 prize giving ceremony at Windsor Park Stadium on February 24, 2016.
The injunction was for the prevention of the event however DBS News understands that lawyers for the DDA and DFC had to make last minute arrangements to allow the event to go as planned.
Band Leaders of both Carnival Corner and Thunderbirds wrote to the carnival organizers last week, expressing their disagreement with the awarding of Adult Carnival Band of the year to the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers. That letter dated February 19, indicated that the bands would be seeking legal redress.
Colin Piper told DBS News on Monday, that the DDA and DFC would have an internal review and speak on the matter at an appropriate time.
Carnival Corner and Thunderbirds did not show up to receive prizes at the prize giving ceremony.
In fact, an announcement was read shortly after the start of the event, indicating that the prize for Carnival band of the year would not be handed out. It said that information as to the awarding will be made available in a subsequent announcement.
All the other prizes down for presentation were awarded to the various winners, including, Miss Dominica 2016, Tasia floissac and other queen show participants, Jouvert and Old Mas awards, Adult carnival band parade, school band awards, business advertising floats and flag wavers.
DBS News will follow development on that story and bring more details as soon as it becomes available.
