Chinese Delegations on Island to Assist with Dominica’s Reconstruction Efforts.
Acting Prime Minister, Dr. Colin McIntyre says one team will review plans for construction of the new Princess Margaret Hospital.
He said, “They’re looking at fine-tuning and commencing the project. The ministry of health has been working feverishly with [the team] discussing the plans for the new hospital. Of course, there will be challenges because we have selected this site where the existing hospital is to build the new hospital, so we took that into consideration as well as how we’re going to allow the hospital to function during construction which is one of the biggest challenges but nothing is impossible in life.
“I think we have a well-planned programme and it’s something that we pride ourselves on and we know definitely that the hospital is something that’s required at this point in time.”
On Friday, November 13th, Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit informed that all systems were go for construction to begin with a commitment by the Chinese Government to provide financing for temporary accommodations in order for work to proceed at the PMH.
Dr. McIntyre says a second Chinese delegation will conclude studies for the design of renovation of the E.O. Leblanc Highway.
“This was a project under the Chinese Government through our friendship [with them]. This highway suffered a lot during TS Erika [on August 27th, 2015.] The Chinese Government listened to our Prime Minister recently when he met with Chinese Government Officials and they have agreed to assist us in the repair of [road networks] and that’s one of the roads which was heavily impacted [especially] most of the areas where you have the bridges.
“So they’re here looking at the dossier prepared by the ministry of Public Works and the plan there is to go ahead, visit the areas, fine tune and make sure that everything is included in the dossier in terms of what the infrastructure of the highway suffered and then the plan is to repair it. This is a project we want to start as soon as 2016. They’re here undertaking final studies to design so we can come back and repair damages from Ts Erika.”
